Mawi Surf Break: What Experienced Surfers Should Know

Mawi is one of South Lombok’s best-known surf locations, valued for powerful, well-shaped waves and dramatic coastal scenery. Unlike the sandy learning area at Selong Belanak, Mawi can involve reef, stronger currents and faster sections. It is better suited to confident intermediate and advanced surfers who can assess a lineup, control their board and handle a more demanding paddle.

Conditions and preparation

The road and beach access can change with weather, so allow extra time and travel in daylight. Bring water, reef-safe sunscreen, basic first aid and any board-repair essentials you may need. Before entering, spend at least fifteen minutes watching the sets. Identify the entry, exit, current and shallow areas, then speak with local surfers if you are uncertain.

Choose the right session

A famous break is not automatically the right break every day. Swell direction, tide and wind can transform the wave.
