Selong Belanak Surf Guide for First-Time Visitors
Selong Belanak is one of the most welcoming places in South Lombok to begin surfing. Its broad bay, sandy bottom and generally forgiving whitewater allow new surfers to practise standing up without the pressure of a shallow reef. Conditions still change with tide, wind and swell, so the best approach is to speak with a local instructor before paddling out. A short lesson can help you choose the safest part of the beach and understand how the current is moving that day.
When to surf
Morning sessions are often calmer, with lighter wind and fewer people. Beginners normally learn in the broken waves close to shore, while more experienced surfers may explore peaks farther out when conditions allow. Wear sunscreen, drink water and avoid leaving valuables unattended. A rash vest is useful for sun protection and comfort on a soft-top board.
Make it part of your stay
Surfing is only one reason to spend time here. Plan a slow beach lunch, watch the bay from a shaded warung and stay for sunset. If you want to compare nearby breaks, read our Mawi surf guide.
